In order to create a healthy social development in a growing postindustrial suburb, diversity in both skills and in job opportunities is indispensable. The industrial harbor areas of Køge ought to be developed responsibly and in harmony with the city and the modernization of Køge through the “Køge Kyst” strategic development plan. The North Industrial harbor will play an important role in Køge’s development from a primary industry based economy to knowledge-based economy with creativity as a cornerstone. Currently the Northern Harbour appears as a traditional industrial area, cut off and blocked from the rest of Køge, where the border between leisure and work is strong.
The vision for the Northern Harbor is to create a new urban structure where “positive” and sustainable industries are intertwined with the urban life. The vision is to enhance recreation and culture that can create a sound interaction between private and professional life. The existing industries should not be moved to new areas. Rather, we propose to introduce unexpected synergies between industrial and urban life. Similar to the ones that can be found in particular areas of the Meatpacking district in Copenhagen – and area that remains active and alive throughout the day.
The “Nyhavn” waterfront will be extended and made available to the east along the quay. The Northern Industrial Harbor will be developed in conjunction with the Køge Kyst project and thus complement it with diverse workplaces for the community. From being a cut-off part of Køge’s public life, the Northern Harbor will become an area of diversity, adaptability and flexibility, and it promotes industrial quality over quantity, creative industries and innovation as well as recreative qualities for the public.
