The Turku Railyard proposal is based on introducing a unique neighbourhood that is characterized by an urban city structure, multi-facetted public spaces and a diverse set of experiences. The backbone of the vision is to continue strict city grid of Turku into the new neighbourhood that is built on the former railyard area. Thus, the aim is to make the railyard a natural continuation of the existing urban fabric of the city centre.
The area is divided into three clear block structures, each one with its own identity. The arena with it’s sports functions stand in the centre as the core of the area. The block on the western side connects to neighbouring housing area while the eastern side contains the planned event and experience functions. These introduce a natural connection to existing event centre Logomo.
Extending the city grid of Turku into the former railyard area introduces a natural, urban extension of the city centre of Turku that can developed in phases over time. The Engine Hall Plaza, which is located in the middle surrounded by the arena, its sports functions, the Music hall as well as the History museum, becomes an attractive all year destination for citizens and visitors alike.
